Petrykivka painting

Petrykivka is a village in the Dnipropetrovsk region, and the decorative painting associated with it is one of the few Ukrainian folk traditions with a genuinely international profile.

What it looks like

Dense floral compositions: stylised flowers that correspond to no particular species, berries, feathery leaves, and birds — sometimes recognisable, often invented. The compositions are symmetrical or spiralling, and they fill the available surface almost completely.

Colour is strong and flat. There is no perspective and no attempt at naturalism, which is a deliberate stylistic position rather than a limitation.

The technique

Traditionally painted on a wall, a stove, a chest or a plate, using brushes made from cat hair, which holds a fine point and a large amount of paint — allowing the long tapering strokes the style depends on.

Several elements are applied with the fingertip rather than a brush. The berries in particular are usually a fingerprint.

How a village tradition survived

Because it was taught formally. A school was established in the village in the twentieth century, masters trained apprentices, and the technique passed through documented lineages rather than only through households.

That formalisation is the reason it exists today when many comparable regional traditions do not.

Recognition

Petrykivka painting was inscribed on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage, which matters practically: it funds teaching, it obliges documentation, and it gives a village tradition a standing that makes it harder to lose.

That a village tradition survived reminds me of what I see in craft businesses: if there is an apprentice beside the master the technique lives, and if there is not, it does not. International recognition is welcome but it is not what protects it — what protects it is somebody in that village still teaching.
