The folk song archive

Ukrainian folk song is one of the larger documented repertoires in Europe, and it exists as a documented repertoire because of a particular period of collecting effort.

How it was collected

Nineteenth-century collectors travelled with notebooks, transcribing texts and, where they could, melodies. Text was easier to capture than tune, which is why early collections are stronger on words.

Then the phonograph, from the turn of the century, which allowed the actual performance to be preserved: the ornamentation, the vocal production, the multi-part singing that notation records badly.

The recordings matter disproportionately, because the way these songs are sung is not deducible from the notation.

How the repertoire is classified

Not by mood or subject but by ritual function, which is the organising principle of the tradition itself: calendar songs tied to a point in the agricultural year, wedding songs tied to a stage of the ceremony, laments, lullabies, harvest songs, and the historical narrative songs.

A song belongs to its moment. Singing a spring calling song in autumn was not done, and the classification reflects a real rule rather than a scholarly convenience.

What the archives now hold

Manuscript collections, wax cylinders, tape from mid-century field expeditions and digital recordings from recent ones. Much has been digitised and published.

Why the archive matters now

Because the village context that produced the songs is largely gone, and the revival ensembles working today are working from these recordings. The archive is the transmission line.

That it was collected just in time is the most important thing about archiving: when something unrecorded is lost, not even the evidence of it remains. In my own sector too, the value of technical documentation is not understood until it is needed. That is also why this archive matters now — if something is to be relearned, it has to exist in writing first.
