Machines, dogs and the limits of both
Clearance is often pictured as a person with a detector. In practice it is a sequence of methods, each faster and less certain than the next.
By 2024 Ukrainian clearance operations were running a layered system, and understanding the layers explains why the work goes at the pace it does.
Mechanical clearance
Armoured machines with flails or tillers that process ground quickly, detonating or breaking devices as they go. Fast and expensive, well suited to open farmland, useless on rocky ground or steep slopes, and not certain — a machine can miss, and machines cannot be used where a mine may lie deeper than the tool reaches.
Detection dogs
Trained to indicate explosive scent, dogs cover ground far faster than a person with a detector and, crucially, ignore metal fragments — which matters enormously on land saturated with shrapnel, where a detector alerts on every scrap.
They are expensive to train, work limited hours, and their reliability depends on the handler as much as the animal.
Manual clearance
Slow, certain and the only method that finally releases land. Everything else narrows the area; a person clears it.
How they fit together
Survey narrows the region. Machines process what they can. Dogs check large areas quickly. Manual teams do the final release and the terrain the machines cannot enter.
The reason clearance cannot simply be accelerated with money is that the final step is human, careful and irreducible. Everything else is preparation for it.
What partners funded
All four layers, and — increasingly — the analytical capacity to decide which layer to apply where, since deploying the wrong method wastes the scarcest resource in this entire effort, which is trained people.
