Building the machines instead of importing them

Mechanical demining machines are specialised, expensive and were in short supply worldwide. By 2025 Ukraine was manufacturing them, and an industry had formed around a problem.

A mechanical demining machine is a heavy tracked vehicle with a flail or tiller on the front, armoured against blast, built to process contaminated ground so that manual teams verify rather than search. There were never many of them in the world, and after 2022 everyone wanted one at once.

By 2025 Ukraine was building them. Manufacturers with backgrounds in agricultural and construction machinery adapted to the specification, submitted equipment for the testing that humanitarian certification requires, and began delivering.

Why this matters beyond supply

Three reasons. Lead time: a machine built here arrives in months rather than joining an international queue. Cost: substantially lower, which means more machines for the same donor money. And service: a machine working in Ukrainian soil, breaking Ukrainian obstacles, is repaired by the people who built it, with parts held locally.

That last point is not minor. In my own trade I have seen excellent imported equipment stand idle for weeks waiting for a component. On clearance work, where the season is short and the calendar agricultural, weeks matter.

An industry, not a programme

What has formed around demining is a supply chain: machine builders, detector suppliers, protective equipment, training centres, certification bodies and operators. That is what a country needs when the work will take decades rather than years.

It is also, incidentally, an export capability. The expertise being accumulated here is unfortunately relevant in a number of other countries.
