Corn and the shift in the crop mix

Ukraine is known abroad for wheat. In the fields, a great deal of the growth over the last two decades has been in maize.

Why the shift happened

Yield. Maize yields per hectare are far higher than wheat, and the gap widened as hybrid seed and better agronomy spread. A farmer comparing gross margin per hectare reaches an obvious conclusion.

Demand. Global feed demand for maize grew steadily, driven by livestock production in Asia and North Africa, and Ukraine had the geography to serve it.

And rotation. Maize fits into a rotation with sunflower and soy in a way that suits the soils and the machinery already on the farm.

What it required

Drying capacity, which is the constraint people outside the sector miss. Maize is harvested wet and must be dried before storage or it spoils. That means dryers, and dryers mean energy and capital, which is why the shift favoured larger operations.

And export logistics sized for volume: rail wagons, terminal capacity and vessels.

The vulnerability

Maize is a low-margin bulk commodity sold into a world market where price is set elsewhere. A producer earns on volume and efficiency, not on differentiation, and a poor price year hurts everyone equally.

Where the value would be

Processing. Starch, feed compounds and food ingredients carry margins that raw grain does not. That is the direction the sector has talked about for years and moved towards slowly, and the constraint has always been capital and reliable energy rather than raw material.

A crop mix is not a preference but a consequence of infrastructure: the shift into maize became possible as drying capacity arrived. I followed it through the sales — as drier orders rose, the maize area grew, not the other way round. Anyone who wants to know what a country plants should look at its post-harvest equipment rather than at the seed catalogue.
