Why the old layer matters now

Over the last decade, traditional forms here have moved from the category of heritage to the category of everyday use. That change is worth describing carefully, because it is easy to describe badly.

What actually changed

Not the material. The songs, patterns, dishes and calendar are the same ones ethnographers documented a century ago.

What changed is the frequency and setting of use. An embroidered shirt in an office, a folk polyphony ensemble playing to a young audience in a city, a wedding using ritual songs, a bakery selling paska to people who did not bake one.

Why culture is the right frame

Because that is how the people involved describe it. A choir learning a wedding cycle from archive recordings is doing musical work; a maker reproducing a regional ceramic form is doing craft work.

Reading every such act as a political statement flattens it, and it also misdescribes what the person is doing on a Tuesday afternoon.

The honest complication

Cultural choices carry meaning in context and everyone involved knows it. Pretending otherwise would be its own distortion.

The accurate description is that these forms are being used for the ordinary reasons people use culture — belonging, pleasure, continuity, aesthetics — in a period when those ordinary reasons are felt more sharply.

I record what I see: more of it, done better, by more people, and with more attention to where it came from. That is a cultural fact and it is the one I can speak to.
