Precision farming on a Ukrainian scale
When a single field is measured in hundreds of hectares, small per-hectare savings become large absolute ones. That is what makes precision agriculture pay here.
Precision agriculture is often presented as a technology story. It is really an arithmetic one: any saving per hectare multiplies by the number of hectares, and Ukrainian operations have a great many of them.
What is actually deployed
Satellite guidance on tractors and sprayers, which removes overlap. Overlap wastes seed, fertiliser and fuel on every pass, and eliminating it pays for the equipment quickly on large fields.
Variable rate application, where fertiliser is placed according to a soil map rather than uniformly. Fields are not uniform, and treating them as if they were means over-applying on the good parts and under-applying on the poor ones.
Yield mapping from the combine, which produces the data that next season's decisions are based on.
And remote sensing, which at Ukrainian field sizes is the only practical way to inspect a crop mid-season.
What limits adoption
Capital, again. The equipment is expensive and the payback, while real, arrives over seasons rather than immediately.
And data discipline: the technology produces value only if someone reads the maps and changes the plan. Operations that bought the hardware and kept farming uniformly got the cost without the benefit.
The specific wartime use
Remote sensing and precise field boundaries have also served damage assessment and the mapping of land taken out of production, which is a use nobody designed for.
The conclusion
The technology is not the hard part. Reading what it produces and acting on it is.
On a single field measured in hundreds of hectares, a small saving per hectare is a large absolute number — that arithmetic made precision farming make sense here earlier than in many other countries. I see it on my side in the hardware orders. What limits adoption is not the technology but the shortage of agronomists who can turn the data into a decision.
