Vyshyvanka Day 2021

The third Thursday of May, and the year the shirts appeared on video calls instead of in corridors.

A good Vyshyvanka Day.

A day built around being seen, in a year when most of us were seen only from the shoulders up in a small rectangle.

It adapted. The shirts appeared on video calls, which turns out to suit them: the embroidery on a vyshyvanka is concentrated at the collar, the shoulders and the upper chest, precisely the area a webcam frames. A garment designed centuries ago for a village gathering turned out to be well composed for a laptop camera.

I doubt anyone intended that. But a good design tends to survive changes of context, and this one had a quietly excellent year.

Wear it, wherever you are being seen from.
