Vyshyvanka Day, 21 May 2026
A greeting for the day, and a note on where the patterns come from.
The patterns are regional and older than most of the borders drawn around them. A specialist can look at a shirt and place it within a few districts, which is a form of geography carried on cloth.
They were also, originally, made at home by somebody who knew the pattern by heart and passed it to a daughter who did the same, without a single one of them being written down.
A design transmitted for centuries by memory and stitch is a fairly impressive piece of engineering, and it is worn to work on a Thursday.
Happy Vyshyvanka Day.
