The black soil, and what it is actually worth

Chernozem is described in every article about Ukrainian agriculture and explained in almost none of them. What makes it exceptional, how much of it there is, and why soil quality is a strategic asset rather than a talking point.

Every article about Ukrainian agriculture mentions the black soil. Almost none explain it, so let me try.

Chernozem is a soil type formed under grassland steppe over thousands of years. Deep-rooted grasses grow, die back and decompose each year, and in a climate cold enough to slow decomposition but warm enough to allow growth, organic matter accumulates faster than it breaks down. The result is a topsoil layer that can run to a metre or more in depth, dark with humus, rich in nutrients, with a crumb structure that holds water without waterlogging.

Why the structure matters more than the fertility

Nutrients can be added. Anyone can buy fertiliser. What cannot be bought is structure: the physical arrangement of aggregates that lets roots penetrate, water infiltrate and air circulate. A soil with good structure is forgiving of a dry spell and of a wet one. That is the real advantage, and it took ten thousand years to build.

Ukraine holds a substantial share of the world total. The exact proportion depends on how you define the soil class, which is why the figures quoted vary so widely, and I would treat any precise percentage you read with caution.

The part that gets left out

Soil quality sets a ceiling. It does not determine the outcome. Ukrainian yields sat well below the biological potential of this land for most of the period I have been here, and the reasons had nothing to do with soil: input finance, machinery, seed genetics, storage losses, and the transport cost between a field and a ship.

Yields rose substantially over two decades, and every part of that improvement came from something other than the soil, which was already there.

What can be lost

Structure degrades. Continuous cropping without rotation, heavy machinery compacting the subsoil, erosion on slopes and organic matter drawn down faster than it is replaced all take from a stock that regenerates on a timescale no business plan contains.

This is the reason conservation practice is not an environmental luxury here. It is asset maintenance on the most valuable thing the country owns.

It is not for me to explain the value of this soil; but I can report one thing I see in the field: what damages its structure is not chemistry but weight. The wrong tyres and too many passes create compaction in a few seasons, and undoing that takes years. When choosing a machine, what it does to the soil often matters more than how fast it works.
