A Christmas greeting on the January date, and a word about the carollers.
The carollers arrive in the evening, in whatever they have assembled: a goat made of sheepskin, a star on a stick, a shepherd who is clearly twelve years old and taking it very seriously.
They sing at the door, are given money or food, and go to the next house. It is a small economy that runs one night a year and settles all its accounts by morning.
Every house on the street participates. That is the part I find most worth noticing: the custom only works if everyone is in it, and everyone is.
Christ is born. A good evening to every table keeping this day.
