Christmas, 25 December 2025
A Christmas greeting on the December date, in the year the change stopped being news.
A peaceful Christmas to everyone marking it today.
This is the third December Christmas and the first in which nobody I spoke to mentioned the date at all. That is how a change completes: not with an argument settled but with the subject ceasing to come up.
Everything else is where it was. The twelve dishes, the kutia first, the place set for someone who is not there — which in a great many houses this year is still not a symbolic gesture.
The form has held through a calendar change, four winters and a dispersal of families across a continent. It is proving to be considerably more robust than the circumstances.
Peace to your house, and to everyone at your table, wherever it is.
