Constitution Day 2005
A greeting for the day a country marks having written its own rules for itself — and nothing further, because the arguments about them are not mine to join.
A good Constitution Day.
I will keep this short, and deliberately so. I am a guest here, however long a guest, and the arguments Ukrainians have about their own constitutional order are theirs. I have opinions about business regulation and I write about them. On this, I hold my tongue.
What I will say is the general thing, which I believe firmly. A country writing its own basic rules for itself, in its own language, is a serious achievement and not a universal one. A great many people have lived and died under rules written elsewhere and handed down.
So: a good day to everyone marking it. The document belongs to you and so does the argument about it.
