Constitution Day 2012

A good Constitution Day.

Short again, and for the reason I always give: the arguments about this document belong to the people it governs, and I am not among them however long my residence permit runs.

What a foreigner can say about a constitution without presumption is a general thing. A written constitution is a promise a country makes to itself about how it will behave when behaving well is inconvenient. Its value is tested only at the moments when someone would prefer to ignore it, and never at the moments when everyone agrees.

That is true of every country including my own.
