Constitution Day 2017
A short greeting, kept short on purpose, in the month Ukrainians gained the right to travel to Europe without a visa.
A good Constitution Day.
I keep these greetings deliberately brief. The constitutional arguments belong to Ukrainians, and a foreigner offering views on them would be presumptuous however long he has lived here.
What I will note about this particular June is something adjacent and less contentious. Earlier in the month, visa-free travel to the European Union came into effect. I watched colleagues book flights without a consular appointment for the first time in their lives, and the reaction was not celebration so much as a kind of disbelief that it had actually happened.
Rules written down, met, and then honoured by the other side. That is a reasonable thing to think about on a day like this one.
