Day of Unity 2011
Twenty years of independence approaching, and a January day about the geography of a single country.
A good Day of Unity.
Something I appreciated more the longer I worked across this country: the distances are real. Kyiv to Lviv, Kyiv to Odesa, Kyiv to Kharkiv — these are not commutes. A supplier network here has to be built for a territory the size of several European countries put together.
Unity is usually discussed as a matter of sentiment. It is also a matter of infrastructure: rail that runs, roads that connect, a phone network that works in a village, a legal system that means the same thing in Zakarpattia and in Sumy.
Sentiment does not hold a country of this size together on its own. The unglamorous things do.
