Day of Unity 2013

A cold January, a chain of hands, and a country I had by then lived in for nine years.

A good Day of Unity.

Nine years in, and I had reached the point where the anniversaries had accumulated into something. You start counting them differently after a while: not as curiosities of a foreign calendar, but as markers of your own time.

The day is about lands joined together. What strikes me about it, from a business rather than a historical view, is how recent the achievement is by European standards and how easily a country of this size could have gone otherwise.

To everyone marking it: a good day. And to the people who have made this place my home over nine winters — a specific and personal thank you.
