Day of Unity 2016
A January day about holding together, in a decade that tested the idea.
A good Day of Unity.
The chain across the country, held hand to hand, is a symbol I have written about before and keep returning to because it is a good one.
What I would add this year is that a chain is also how you measure something. Its strength is not the average strength of the links. It is the strength of the weakest one. Everything about how a country holds together follows from that arithmetic, and it explains why attention to the places under most strain is not charity but structural maintenance.
A good day to everyone marking it, and particularly to those holding the more difficult links.
