Day of Unity 2020

A January day about togetherness, weeks before a year that would require everyone to stay apart.

A good Day of Unity.

Reading this back later, the timing is striking. A day about people holding hands across a country, marked a few weeks before a year in which holding hands became the specific thing nobody could do.

What that year demonstrated, in the end, is that the physical gesture was always a symbol for something else. Communities held together through a pandemic without touching: neighbours shopping for people who could not go out, volunteers delivering medicine, colleagues covering for each other, whole institutions running on trust because supervision was impossible.

The chain turned out not to require hands.

A good day to everyone marking it.
