Day of Unity, 22 January 2021

A unity day greeting in a year when a chain of people holding hands was not something anyone could organise.

A good Day of Unity to everyone marking it.

This is a commemoration whose entire method is people holding hands in a line, which in January 2021 is precisely the thing that cannot be done.

What happened instead was a certain amount of ingenuity: chains formed at distance with ribbons and scarves between the participants, chains formed online out of photographs, and in several places small groups at intervals along a bridge rather than a continuous line.

None of it is the same, and everyone involved knew it. But a tradition adapted awkwardly for a year is a tradition that returns intact, and one skipped entirely sometimes does not.

A good day to you and yours.
