Day of Unity, 22 January 2023

A good Day of Unity to everyone marking it.

The usual observance is a human chain across a bridge, and this year the usual observance is not available. Large gatherings in the open are not something anyone organises now.

So it is being kept in smaller ways: in schools, in classrooms, online, and in a great many places abroad where Ukrainians who did not plan to be there formed the chain in a park in a foreign city.

There is something almost pointed about that. A commemoration of a country holding together, performed this year by people who have been physically scattered further than at any time in living memory, and who did it anyway.

A good day to you, wherever you are keeping it.
