Day of Unity 2024
Twenty years since I arrived, and a January day about lands held together.
A good Day of Unity.
This one marked twenty years since I first came to Kyiv. Twenty is a number that makes a person take stock, and what I notice is that the anniversaries which once seemed like anthropological observations have become simply my own calendar.
The image of the day is a chain of people holding hands. I wrote some years ago that I liked it because a chain works only if everyone holds on to two others.
Twenty years later I would add something. It also only works if people keep holding on when it stops being a symbolic gesture on a cold morning and becomes a genuinely tiring thing to do for a long time. That distinction has been demonstrated here more thoroughly than anyone would have wished.
A good day to everyone marking it.
