Easter 2009

An Easter in the middle of a financial crisis, when the table was smaller and the greeting was the same.

Christ is risen. A peaceful Easter to everyone marking it.

This one fell in a difficult spring. The currency had gone from five to eight the previous autumn, factories were on short time, and a great many households were counting carefully.

What I noticed that year was that the baskets still went to church. Perhaps with less in them. The paska was still baked, the eggs were still written, the greeting was still exchanged in the same words it always is.

I have come to think that this is what a tradition is for. Not for the good years, when anyone can lay a full table. For the years when you cannot, and you do it anyway, because the doing is the point and not the contents.
