Easter 2024

The fifth of May, and a greeting from the twentieth Easter I have marked in this country.

Christ is risen. A peaceful Easter to your household.

My twentieth here. Something I notice at this distance: the people who first invited me to this table are now old, and their grandchildren, who were small children when I met them, are the ones organising it.

That is not a remark about the passage of time in general. It is a specific observation about how a tradition transfers. Nobody instructed those grandchildren. They watched it happen every year for twenty years and then, at some point, without discussion, took over the parts their grandparents could no longer do.

That is the entire mechanism. There is no other one.

Christ is risen.
