Easter, 4 April 2010
An Easter greeting, and a note on the egg-tapping that decides who has the strongest shell.
Christ is risen. A blessed Easter to everyone marking it today.
The part of the day I did not expect to be competitive is the eggs. Two people each hold one, tap them point to point, and whoever's shell survives goes on to the next opponent. This continues around the table until one egg is undefeated.
It is taken more seriously than the outcome warrants, there are accusations about which end to use, and somebody always claims a particular egg was hard-boiled longer.
Traditions survive because they are enjoyable, and a holiday with a competition built into it is more enjoyable than one without.
A good table to your family, and may your egg hold.
