A remembrance message on an evening that has been kept every year I have been here.

Today Ukraine remembers those who died in the famine of 1932 and 1933.

I have now written this message every year for two decades. The wording changes a little; the day does not. At the appointed hour a light goes in a window, in houses that cannot see each other, for people who were not counted at the time.

What has changed over twenty years is the archive. Each year more names are established from parish records, village lists and family testimony, and each name moves something from an estimate into a record.

That work is done quietly by researchers and by families, and it is the reason this will still be commemorated accurately in a hundred years.

My respect to everyone marking today.
