A midsummer greeting, and the one instruction everybody gives you before the fire.
A good Kupala night to everyone marking it.
The instruction, given to me firmly the first time I attended, is that you jump in pairs and you do not let go of the hand. If the hands separate over the fire, the reading is unfavourable, and everyone watching will tell you so at length.
Nobody believes this. Everybody holds on tightly.
That is the whole character of the night. A large number of people doing something with complete commitment and no belief whatsoever, and enjoying it more for the combination.
