Knowledge Day 2008
The first September in twenty years that I was not going back to a classroom. I had graduated in the summer and was working, and I missed it more than I expected.
Happy Knowledge Day.
This was the first one where I was not going anywhere. I had finished at the Polytechnic that summer — mechanical engineering, four years, a diploma in a language I had not spoken when I arrived — and on the first of September I went to work instead.
I remember watching the children with flowers from a tram window and feeling something I had not anticipated. Not nostalgia exactly. More the recognition that a structure which had organised my life since I was six had quietly stopped applying to me.
To everyone going back today: it is a privilege and it does not feel like one at the time. And to those who finished this year and are starting work — the learning does not stop, it just stops being scheduled.
