Knowledge Day, 1 September 2009
A first-of-September greeting, and a note on the one thing that never gets cut.
A good first day of school to every pupil, and to the teachers waiting in the yard.
This September follows a hard year, and I know that in a great many households the school clothes were bought carefully and the flowers were picked rather than purchased. That has not changed the morning at all.
The first bell still rings, the smallest child is still carried around the yard, the flowers still end up on the teacher's desk in numbers no vase can hold. Of everything a family cuts in a difficult year, this ceremony is not on the list.
To the first-year pupils especially: enjoy today. It is one of the few days when the entire yard is looking at you kindly.
