Knowledge Day 2014
A first of September in a hard year, and the teachers who opened the doors anyway.
Happy Knowledge Day.
A difficult first of September, and I will keep to what belongs in a greeting.
Schools opened. In a year that had disrupted a great deal, the school year began, children arrived with flowers, and teachers who had every reason to be preoccupied stood at the door and received them.
Teaching is one of those professions where the work is not optional and cannot be postponed. A cohort of six-year-olds turns six only once. Whatever else is happening, someone has to be in the classroom on the first of September, and someone always was.
To every teacher who opened a door this morning: thank you. To every child with flowers: a good year.
