Knowledge Day 2016
The first of September, and a note on the external testing that changed who gets into university.
Happy Knowledge Day.
A note for the students starting university this month, who will not appreciate what they have been given because it was already there when they arrived.
You were admitted on a score from an externally marked, anonymised test. The person marking your paper did not know your name, your school, your city or who your father is. That was not the case for the generation before you, and it is the single most consequential thing that has been done for social mobility in this country in my time here.
It is worth knowing that somebody built that deliberately and that it was not easy.
To everyone starting today: a good year.
