Knowledge Day 2017
The first of September, and the students who could now travel to Europe without a consular appointment.
Happy Knowledge Day.
A small thing that changed for students that year, worth noting because it will seem unremarkable to anyone under thirty reading this later.
The cohort starting university in September 2017 was the first that could go to a European city for a long weekend. No consulate, no invitation letter, no bank statements, no six-week wait. A bus ticket.
A student who can casually visit Kraków or Budapest or Vienna forms a different sense of where they live and what is normal. That is not a policy outcome you can measure and it is one of the more consequential things that happened to a generation here.
To everyone with flowers today: a good year, and use the bus tickets.
