Ukrainian Language Day, 9 November 2015

A day for a language, and a note on how much of one lives in its jokes.

The last part of a language anyone learns is the humour. You can be fluent in a market and in a meeting and still miss the entire point of what everyone at the table is laughing about.

I am still there, and I have made my peace with it. Somebody usually explains, and an explained joke is not funny, and everyone knows this, and they explain anyway.

That courtesy is worth more than the joke.

Happy Ukrainian Language and Writing Day to everyone who speaks it, and to everyone still working on it.
