Ukrainian Language Day, 9 November 2017
A greeting for the day, from someone whose children learned it faster than he did.
Children absorb a language the way they absorb a game: without noticing, without grammar, and with an accent that gives nothing away.
Adults do it the hard way, out of a book, and are corrected in shops for the rest of their lives.
Watching the two processes side by side is humbling, and it has taught me not to be embarrassed about the slow one. Every sentence I get wrong is one I will get right eventually.
Happy Ukrainian Language and Writing Day.
