New Year 2008
The last New Year before the crisis, spent entirely unaware that it was the last of anything.
Happy New Year.
Reading this back, the interesting thing is the confidence. That New Year fell at the end of several good years. The economy had grown, salaries had risen, people were borrowing to buy apartments and cars, and the exchange rate had been at five for as long as anyone in my circle had been paying attention.
Nobody standing in a courtyard that night was thinking about currency risk. I certainly was not, and I was about to graduate into a job in international trade.
I do not write that to be wise afterwards. I write it because it is the honest record of what that evening felt like, and because good years are also worth having on the file.
A good year to your household.
