New Year 2010
A New Year at the end of a bad year, and the observation that a calendar is a useful fiction.
Happy New Year.
The end of a difficult twelve months, and I remember thinking that the whole business of a new year is a useful fiction. Nothing changes at midnight. The contracts, the debts, the currency and the problems all continue into January exactly as they were in December.
And yet it works. People treat the line as real, take a breath, and begin again on the other side of it. A society that agrees to pretend a fresh start exists gets most of the benefit of one.
I have come to think that is not naive. It is a piece of practical psychology that human beings worked out a long time ago and have kept because it functions.
A good year to your household.
