New Year, 1 January 2011
A New Year greeting, at the hour when the whole country is at the same table.
New Year here is the family holiday, more than any other. The tree, the salads made the day before, the television on quietly, and everyone at the table at midnight regardless of what they think of the year that is ending.
I have spent several of these now, and what I have taken from them is the pace: nobody hurries, the meal lasts hours, and the conversation gets round to everybody.
A good year to all of you. May the coming one be kinder than the one that has gone, and may your table be full.
