A new year greeting at the start of a year that everyone already knew would be difficult.

A happy new year to everyone.

Nobody is entering this year with illusions. The autumn made sure of that, and around most tables last night there was at least one conversation about work, or a loan, or whether a business will still be there in June.

What I noticed is that the conversation happened and then stopped, and the evening carried on. People here have a well-developed ability to acknowledge a bad situation, name it accurately, and then put it down for the length of a holiday.

That is not denial. It is a skill, and it is one of the reasons difficult years get survived.

To everyone worried about the coming months: I hope the year treats you better than expected. And a good new year to your house.
