New Year, 1 January 2012
A new year greeting, and a note on the people who work through the night so everyone else can sit down.
A happy new year to everyone.
Somebody kept the heat on last night. Somebody was in a hospital corridor, on a railway platform, in a boiler house, at a switchboard, driving a taxi at three in the morning through a city where every other person was celebrating.
A holiday of this size only works because a minority of people do not get to have it. That is true everywhere and it is worth saying out loud once a year.
So: to everyone who was at a table last night, a good year. And to everyone who was at work, the same, plus my genuine thanks.
