A new year greeting at the start of a new decade, written before anyone knew what the year would contain.
A happy new year, and a happy new decade, to everyone.
There was more ceremony than usual last night, because a decade turning gives people permission to be slightly grander about a night they would have enjoyed anyway.
I spent part of the evening being asked what I expected from the coming ten years, which is a question nobody should answer honestly at midnight. What I said was that I expected more of the last decade's trends and rather less drama, and I offer that here in the same spirit of complete confidence.
To everyone starting the year with plans: I hope they hold. To everyone starting it tired: the days get longer from here.
