St Nicholas Day, 19 December 2015
A greeting for the quiet gift, and for the people who arrange them for children who are not their own.
Every year around this date, lists circulate: children in hospital, children in institutions, children whose families are having a hard winter, and what each of them asked for.
People take a name off the list, buy the thing, and it arrives. Nobody involved meets anybody, which is presumably the correct arrangement given whose day it is.
I have watched this happen every December I have been here and it has never once needed organising from the top.
Happy St Nicholas Day, and thank you to everyone quietly filling a list.
