Yields, and the gap that closed
Ukrainian grain yields roughly doubled over two decades on the same soil. Understanding how is more useful than admiring that it happened.
In the late 1990s Ukrainian yields were far below what the soil could support. Twenty years later they were much closer to it. Nothing about the land changed; four other things did.
Seed genetics
Access to modern hybrids, particularly in maize and sunflower, where the difference between an old open-pollinated variety and a current hybrid is very large. This was the single fastest-acting change, because it applies from the first season a farm switches.
Fertiliser and crop protection
Applied according to soil testing rather than by habit. Under-application was as common as over-application, and both cost money.
Machinery
Modern seeders place seed at a consistent depth and spacing, which affects emergence more than most other decisions. Modern combines lose less grain at harvest. Neither is glamorous and both show up directly in the tonnage.
Management
Timeliness. Sowing and harvesting within the correct window is worth more than any input, and it requires enough machinery capacity to cover the whole area quickly. That is a capital question, which returns to the financing theme.
What remains
Drainage and irrigation in the south, storage to avoid post-harvest loss, and the mid-size farms that have not been able to finance the same upgrades as the large operators.
The remaining gap is not agronomic knowledge. It is the unevenness of access to capital, which is the same conclusion almost every question in this sector reaches.
In the doubling of yields the machine's share is smaller than most people assume and management's share far larger: the same tractor produces a different result when it works at the right depth at the right time. I have seen that many times in the field. What will close the remaining gap is not new equipment but agronomy knowledge spreading.
