The railway as an energy and logistics system
Ukrainian railways carry freight, passengers, evacuations and diplomats. They are also one of the country's largest electricity consumers, which makes them an energy story.
The railway is the single institution that has most visibly continued to function throughout, and it is worth understanding as infrastructure rather than as a symbol.
The physical facts
A large network, most of the main lines electrified, built for heavy freight — coal, ore, grain, metal — in trainloads rather than containers.
Electrification means the railway is a major electricity consumer, so grid damage is directly a transport problem. It also means diesel locomotives, kept as reserve, matter more than their number suggests.
And the gauge differs from the European standard, so everything crossing the western border must be transhipped or have its bogies changed. That single technical fact is the main constraint on how much freight can move westward.
What changed after 2022
Freight that had gone by sea was redirected to rail, overwhelming the western crossings. Passenger service became the principal means of long-distance movement, including evacuation, and ran on a schedule that was kept with unusual rigour.
New capacity at the border, additional standard-gauge sections and improved terminal handling all followed, and they remain the highest-return transport investments available.
What it means for reconstruction
Rebuilding requires moving very large volumes of aggregate, cement and steel. That is exactly what a railway does well and a road network does badly, so rail capacity is a precondition rather than an accompaniment.
The institutional note
A railway that keeps its timetable during a war is telling you something about the organisation, not the track.
Most of the heavy equipment I bring in ends up on the railway at some point; gauge, wagon type and unloading point are not abstractions to me but a delivery date. That is why I read the railway not as a transport line item but as the country's real capacity ceiling. When its power goes, what stops is not a train but the whole supply chain behind it.
