Telecommunications that stayed up
A mobile network needs power at every base station. Keeping a country connected through repeated blackouts was a logistics operation more than a technical one.
People assume a mobile network fails when equipment is damaged. In practice it fails when the power goes off, because every base station is a small electrical load that stops within hours of losing supply.
The power problem
A typical base station has batteries for a few hours. Extending that means larger battery banks or generators at thousands of sites, plus the fuel logistics to refuel them, plus crews to do it during a blackout.
That is the operation that kept networks running: not clever engineering, but generators, diesel and drivers, repeated across the country every time the grid went down.
National roaming
An arrangement under which a subscriber of one operator can use another operator's network when their own is unavailable. Commercially it is something operators resist; in an emergency it converts three partly-working networks into one that mostly works.
Agreeing it required a regulator willing to require it and operators willing to accept the settlement terms.
Backhaul and redundancy
Base stations connect to the core network by fibre, and a cut fibre disables everything behind it. Ring topologies, multiple routes and satellite backhaul for critical sites are what prevent a single cut from taking out a region.
What it demonstrated
Connectivity is now infrastructure in the same sense as water. Payments, air raid warnings, government services and family contact all run through it, and the resilience measures that look expensive in peacetime turned out to be the cheapest part of the response.
This is a logistics story more than a telecoms one: getting fuel and generators to every base station is a question of how many vehicles and how many crews you have in the field. Having built a service network, I know what that means — coverage does not live on the map but in the number of people who can drive it. Keeping the network up was a distribution job more than an engineering one.
