Unity Day, 22 January 2014
A greeting for the day, kept to the anniversary itself.
I will keep this one to the date and nothing else, which is the right thing for a guest to do in any January.
The anniversary commemorates an act of joining: two administrations, each with its own history and its own difficulties, deciding to be one state.
Whatever else is going on in a given year, that is what the day is for, and it is a reasonable thing for a country to keep in its calendar.
Congratulations on Unity Day, and my best wishes to everyone marking it.
