Vyshyvanka Day 2015
By 2015 the day had grown from a student idea into something worn across the whole country, and the reasons people wore it had changed.
A good Vyshyvanka Day.
The thing had grown. What began at a university in Chernivtsi was by now visible in every city, in offices, on the metro, in photographs sent between families.
I will not write about why that happened in these years, because this is a greeting and not a commentary. I will say only that a garment can carry a great deal, and that the carrying is done quietly, by ordinary people getting dressed in the morning.
Mine came from a colleague, and I wear it. The stitches on it were made by somebody's hands, in a pattern older than any of us, and that is a good enough reason on its own.
