Vyshyvanka Day, 16 May 2024
A greeting for the day, and a note on the shirts being made now by people who learned during the war.
A good Vyshyvanka Day to everyone wearing one today, wherever you are.
Something worth recording this year: a large number of people took up embroidery during these years, and a proportion of the shirts on the street today were made recently by people who did not know how in 2021.
The reasons are various and mostly practical. It is something to do with your hands in a shelter or during a blackout. It requires no power, no connection and very little light. And it produces an object at the end, which distinguishes it from most ways of passing an anxious evening.
A craft that a generation learns under those conditions is a craft with another forty years in it.
A good day to you, and to whoever taught you.
