Christmas, 7 January 2022
A Christmas greeting on an ordinary January evening, with the tables as full as they had been for years.
A happy Christmas to everyone marking it today.
The tables are fuller this year than the last two. Grandparents are at them rather than on a screen, cousins travelled, and the restrictions that shaped the previous two winters have largely gone.
There is a particular quality to a holiday that returns to normal after an interruption. People are slightly more attentive than usual, and slightly less inclined to complain about the number of relatives in a small kitchen.
I hope everyone reading this is at a full table tonight, and I hope they stay that way.
Peace to your house, and a good evening.
