New Year 2022
A New Year greeting written on the first of January 2022, which reads differently now than it did then.
Happy New Year.
I have thought carefully about how to write this one, since anyone reading it knows what the year contained and I did not.
What I remember of that first of January is entirely ordinary. Fireworks in the courtyards, the same as every year. People in the street at two in the morning. Plans made for the spring — a delivery schedule, a project, a holiday somebody was looking forward to.
I am going to leave the greeting as it would have been. To everyone who was in this country that night, making ordinary plans: I hope the ordinary parts of that year, the ones that did happen, were good ones.
