Christmas, 7 January 2023
A Christmas greeting for a January when households were marking it on two different dates for the first time.
A peaceful Christmas to everyone marking it today.
This January is the first in which the date itself is not settled. A significant number of households marked Christmas in December, and a significant number are marking it today, and in some families both happened.
I have heard people worry that this divides something. Watching it up close, I would say the opposite: the households doing both are not confused, they are being generous — accommodating a grandmother's calendar and a decision taken elsewhere at the same time, and cooking twice rather than arguing once.
The table is the same either way, and so is what is on it.
Peace to your house, on whichever date you kept it.
